Next Meeting: Monday 12 December 2022

We are delighted to welcome a long-standing well-respected friend of St Helens Historical Society on Monday, Professor Charles Esdaille, to give a talk entitled

"The War in Ukraine"

where Professor Esdaille's knowledge, understanding and perspective as a military historian promises to provide the sort of specialist commentary this topic so desperately needs.

The talk will take place at the Friends Meeting House (George Street, WA10 1BU) and doors will open at 7:00pm ahead of the start of the talk at 7:30pm. There is very limited parking at the Meeting House itself, but the adjacent NCP (between the Meeting House and the Raven) offers parking with rates of £0.95 for up to two hours and £2.95 for two to three hours.

Next meeting: Monday 21 November 2022 - change to scheduled talk

In a change to our published schedule, we will instead be welcoming Mr Allan Moore on Monday to deliver a talk entitled:

"St Helens Railway Tracks and Stations of the Past"

which promises to give a fascinating insight into a major part of out town's heritage.

Next Meeting: Monday 17 October 2022

After his fascinating Zoom talk in May about lives of chemical/alkali workers in 19th Century St Helens, we're delighted to have HistSoc member Peter Harvey at our in-person October meeting to deliver a talk entitled

"Witches, Nuns and Nurses"

giving details of how women from various Christian traditions have contributed to medical philanthropy and civic culture. The talk will draw on the work of Dr Carmen M Mangion and will apply this work specifically to St Helens.

"King Arthur and his Landscape Monk" - Mark Olly talk re-scheduled

Our talk from Mark Olly will now take place on Monday 26 September instead of Monday 19. The start time remains 7:00pm for doors opening and 7:30pm for the start of the talk and venue remains the Friends Meeting House. Mark and the rest of us very much hope to see you on the re-arranged date!

"Mary Merryweather: Pioneer Nurse and Political Reformer" - to be given by Chris Jones

All talks are given at the Friends' Meeting House Church Street St Helens WA10 1AJ. Doors open at 7:00pm ahead of the start of the talk at 7:30pm.

In addition to the above monthly meetings, we will be holding an Annual Dinner and and AGM. We also hope to arrange at least one outing. Details of these events will be provided as soon as they have been arranged.

Annual membership of St Helens Historical Society costs £12. Visitors will be charged £3 per meeting attended.

Upcoming In-Person Event, 20/06/22(Mon)

We've got an in-person event coming up, our first in over two years. Specifically:

Event: a screening of the film "Zulu"

Venue: Lucem House Community Cinema, 78 Corporation Street, St Helens. WA10 1GQ.

Date and Time: Monday 20 June 2022, doors open 7:00pm for 7:30pm start

Admission: £5 payable on the door.

Introducing our speaker for February 2022: Brian Groom

Brian Groom is a well-respected journalist who was brought up in the North-West of England. A bit more information can be found about him here:


The title of his talk on Monday is "Northerners. A History: from the Ice Ages to the 21st Century". This is also the title of a published book written by Mr Groom. More information about the book can be found here:
